Bio 111- Topic 14 (Terms) Climate + Biomes

Term Definition
Abiotic non-living chemical and physical parts of the environment that affect living organisms and the functioning of ecosystems
Biomes Regions characterized by distinct abiotic characteristics and dominant types of vegetation
Biotic The living things in an ecosystem (ex plants, animals, bacteria etc)
El Nino (Warm phase)
La Nina (Cold phase)
Homeostasis the ability to maintain a relatively stable internal environment despite changes in external conditions
Microclimate The climate of a small area, especially when it differs from the climate of the surrounding area (ex: in the shadow of a tree or rock)
Thermoconformer (Heterotherm) Allows body temp to fluctuate, (most invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles)
Thermoregulator (Homeotherm) keep body temp constant, (mammals, most birds), *this is energetically expensive
Vertical Stratification The layering of a habitat – the arrangement of vegetation
Regulator Actively controls internal environment
Conformer Allows conditions in body to change with environment
Evapotranspiration how much water + vapor plants are omitting – the more evapotranspiration, the more productivity
Rain Shadow Warm air rises, to go over mountain range and as it cools it causes heavy precipitation on windward side. Then as the cool dry air descends, it warms + absorbs moisture causing the leeward side to be dry.
